A Little Sleep, a little Slumber……. Preacher: Rev. Dr. Ayo Gbode
  • May 24 2017

“Also, when the church begins to sleep, the church becomes inactive, inefficient and forget God’s agenda for the Kingdom. Jesus wants us to wake up from the stupor and slumber in the spirit. So that spiritual poverty wouldn’t creep up on you like a bandit.”

Bible reading: Proverbs 6:1-11

Proverbs is a book of wisdom. At all  phases of our life, we long for extra time to sleep. However, it seems that successful people usually cut off their sleeping time. Balancing success and health could be a difficult thing to attain. Nonetheless, when we decide to sleep or lazy around, poverty, retrogression and failure become part of our lives.

Vs 1-5 looks at Admonishment for us not to be consumed by ego.
Vs 6-15 looks at Living our lives
Vs 16-19 looks at the Six things God detests
Vs20-35: Warning against adultery

The focus today will be on laziness. The writer of Chapter 6:6-11, looks at the characteristics of the ant. The writer challenges us to look at this insect

Traits of the Ant
• No one could tell who leads the ant, the ant was busy.
• The ant knows its duty
• The ant is very wise
• The ant is interdependent. The queen ant produces different species of ant to perform special functions.
• The ant understand the times and seasons. Hence, they save for the rainy day

Proverbs 19:15: Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry.
Proverbs 18:9- One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.
Proverbs 24:30-34: The sluggard’s farm isn’t properly cared for.
Proverbs 15:19- the way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.
Proverbs 20:13- don’t love sleep…
Proverbs 21: 17- don’t be engrossed by pleasure…..

God doesn’t bless laziness.
The most dangerous sleep is Spiritual sleep. Spiritual sleep leads to
• Lack of direction;
• God would never entrust anything if you’re slumbering spiritually;
• Your gifts do not edify the people in the body of Christ.

Also, when the church begins to sleep, the church becomes inactive, inefficient and forget God’s agenda for the Kingdom. Jesus wants us to wake up from the stupor and slumber in the spirit. So that spiritual poverty wouldn’t creep up on you like a bandit.

Prayer: Ask God for grace to revive us from spiritual slumber.
